Fishing Reel Combos
Are you looking for a complete Fishing Reel Combo? One that comes complete with a fishing rod that matches the reel that comes with it?
Did you know that you cannot simply put any reel onto just any rod? Nope, you need to put the same type of reel onto the same type of rod. Example, A spinning reel (also known as an open face reel) hangs on the bottom of the fishing rod; therefore you need a rod that has the accommodations for the reel to be attached to the bottom side of the rod. However, some fishing rods are compatible with all reels.
The quickest way to tell when looking at a fishing rod is to look at the handle, some handles are simply a round stock and no special shape. Other rods will have a contoured “butt end” to fit nicely as it is gripped.
There are 3 different types of fishing reel combos that you need to consider before purchasing.
SPINCAST
First you have your SpinCast fishing reel combos. The spincast reel is the perfect reel for the beginner fisherman (or fisherwoman), It is also known as the closed face reel. Spincast reels have a push button line release which you use in order to cast. The spool of fishing line is enclosed safely behind a nosecone. In the center of this nosecone is a hole where the line comes out of the reel. Spin casting reels are a top mounted reel and are most often used when fishing for small to medium sized fish, or the new beginner or casual anglers.
SPINCAST RODS
Generally these rods are 5 to 6 feet in length, have a short grip and small eyelets. These rods are usually limber with good action and quite light in weight. Spincast fishing reel combos are fine for casting medium weight lures/bait.
Overall Review for Spincast Fishing Reel Combos.
Pros- Fairly inexpensive, easy to use, can find at most any store that offer fishing supplies.
Cons- limited casting distance, limited space for fishing line, best if weight of line is 8 lbs or less, Not for large fish.
SPINNING REEL
Next you have your Spinning Fishing Reel combos. The spinning reel also known as the open faced reel, offer the angler the ability to cast further and easier than with a spincast reel. This is mainly the result of the way the spinning reel is designed. There is less drag on the fishing line as it peels off the spool. As seen in the picture below, there is no nosecone for the fishing line to rub against which causes the drag. Also the line capacity of spinning reels is much higher than that of spincast reels. You will also note that the reel is located on the under side of the rod.
SPINNING RODS
Spinning rods are usually more limber than spincasting or baitcasting rods. This is one of the benefits that makes spinning rods excellent for casting light lures or bait, way more so than spincasting or baitcasting. Spinning rods come in various lengths.
Overall Review for Spinning Fishing Reel Combos.
Pros-Can cast further than your average spincast fishing reel. Length of spinning rod varies to accommodate more fishing locations. And able “play” bigger fish longer until they tire out.
Cons- Not easy to use for the beginner. Not good for small areas like brooks and streams. Line can easily get tangled.
Bait Casting Reel
This reel is probably the most difficult reel to cast. This reel is definitely not recommended for the first time angler. Your average Baitcasting reel is a lot more rugged then the spinning reel and the spin cast reel. This ruggedness allows you to use heavy line, heavier tackle and fish for the big fish. You will notice that most ocean bound anglers use the bait casting Fishing Reel combos.
With practice an angler can have a lot more casting accuracy then they can with the other reels. Bait casting reels can handle heavy use day in and day out without wearing out. The reel itself is made of much sturdier material, mainly because it is generally used in places that call for heavy duty equipment. Bait casting reels are located on the top of the rod much like the spincast reel.
Bait Casting Rods
Bait casting rods come in a larger variety of lengths. The rods are not as light weight and flexible as the spincast or spinning rods. This rigidness is useful for bringing in the large fish such as steelheads or the massive tuna.
Overall Review for Bait Casting Fishing Reel Combos.

Cons- Hard to cast for beginners. Line can “backlash’ and snarl up your line. Not good for fishing in small areas like brooks and streams.
Hopefully with this information you now can choose which type of fishing reel combos is best suited for you.
And remember, Not all Fishing Reel combos are the same, even if they are the same type of reel. So be sure to get the right length rod when you are searching for your next fishing reel combo.
